Thankful Thursday ~ Daily Bread

“Give us this day our daily bread…”
(Matthew 6:11 ESV)

Sometimes I forget how truly blessed I am and that I should take nothing for granted. Not my health, and my wealth. I am reminded every time I drive past “Paz De Cristo“, an organization that supplies food and water to the homeless people in my part of town.

You see, even though I am not wealthy by worldly standards, I am richer than most people. I can provide food for my family and even for friends. It may not be much that I bring to the table, but we have never experienced hunger. I cannot even imagine how that feels.

This past Sunday, the banner over the altar hit me right between the eyes. Even though the banner has been hanging over the altar for some time, I never really paid attention to the Bible verse, it says:

“And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’ (Matthew 25:40 ESV ~ emphasis mine)

On Sunday, I wasn’t sure why the verse hit me hard; I have read it, heard it a million times…But as I was driving once again past “Paz De Cristo” I knew why. I do have my daily bread, and I take it for granted. I need to pay more attention to the people around me, especially to the hungry children that line up at the homeless shelter.

Lord of Heaven and Earth. Thank you for opening my eyes. Help me to be more mindful of the people that do not have their daily bread. Help me to see the need in my community. Help me to be Your hands and feet, that bring not only the physical but also the spiritual bread. In the precious name of Jesus. Amen.

  1. Hi Iris,
I have been taking part in Thankful Thursday for three weeks now, and I’d like to thank you for hosting this.

Your article reminds me that I take so many things for granted, and that we need to be more mindful of what God is providing us with.

    Blessings.

  2. Thank you for this wonderful reminder about not taking ANYTHING given to us by God, for granted…and to have eyes to see and ears to hear. Thank you for the link up also. Have a blessed day!

  3. Wonderful post. I’m thankful that I have food to eat and that my family is safe, well-fed and alive. Yes, alive. No, we haven’t had any brushes with death or anything, but, when I hear about parents losing their children, it just makes me appreciate my son even more.

  4. What an awesome post and reminder. It is funny how God draws our attention to certain scriptures at certain times and we do need to be his hands and feet upon this earth. That is what we are here for! Bless you!!

  5. So, so true! Traveling to Ethiopia twice in the past year, I now am so thankful for clean water. It is something so basic here in America, it pours out of multiple faucets in most of our homes whenever we turn them on, but for some people in other countries they have to walk long ways to get to water and then it is sometimes water that can make them sick.

  6. What an important reminder to each one of us! It can be all too easy to get caught up in our own lives and not even notice those who are suffering.

Recently I started to watch a TV show called “The Secret Millionaire”. It was better than the title suggests. It has created such awareness for organizations who are trying to help the needy. Each week a ‘secret millionaire’ goes on a mission to seek out those who are already trying to help groups. They agree to give money to several organizations and reveal who they really are after spending time with them and volunteering. I always end up crying by the end and I’m not really a crier.

    blessings and love,
    Debbie

  7. That Scripture hits me right in the heart too Iris! Thank you for sharing a powerful thankful post! I am thankful this moment that I came here to read this and to visit with you.

Blessings to you sweet sister. Thank you for the encouragement you give to all of us!

I love and am humbled that the word for me to type is: Cross. Fits with your post in many ways…
