The below prayer was written and shared by Max Lucado as America Prays, a national prayer vigil held Saturday, September 14, 2001. Permission to copy not only granted but encouraged; MaxLudado.com

Dear Lord,
We’re still hoping we’ll wake up. We’re still hoping we’ll open a sleepy eye and think, What a horrible dream. But we won’t, will we, Father? What we saw was not a dream. Planes did gouge towers. Flames did consume our fortress. People did perish. It was no dream and, dear Father, we are sad.

There is a ballet dancer who will no longer dance and a doctor who will no longer heal. A church has lost her priest, a classroom is minus a teacher. Cora ran a food pantry. Paige was a counselor and Dana, dearest Father, Dana was only three years old. (Who held her in those final moments?)

We are sad, Father. For as the innocent are buried, our innocence is buried as well. We thought we were safe. Perhaps we should have known better. But we didn’t.

And so we come to you. We don’t ask you for help; we beg you for it. We don’t request it; we implore it. We know what you can do. We’ve read the accounts. We’ve pondered the stories and now we plead, Do it again, Lord. Do it again.

Remember Joseph? You rescued him from the pit. You can do the same for us. Do it again, Lord. Remember the Hebrews in Egypt? You protected their children from the angel of death. We have children, too, Lord. Do it again.

And Sarah? Remember her prayers? You heard them. Joshua? Remember his fears? You inspired him. The women at the tomb? You resurrected their hope. The doubts of Thomas? You took them away. Do it again, Lord. Do it again.

You changed Daniel from a captive into a king’s counselor. You took Peter the fisherman and made him Peter an apostle. Because of you, David went from leading sheep to leading armies. Do it again, Lord, for we need counselors today, Lord. We need apostles. We need leaders. Do it again, dear Lord. Do It Again, Lord.

Most of all, do again what you did at Calvary. What we saw here on that Tuesday, you saw there on that Friday. Innocence slaughtered. Goodness murdered. Mothers weeping. Evil dancing. Just as the ash fell on our children, the darkness fell on your Son. Just as our towers were shattered, the very Tower of Eternity was pierced.

And by dusk, heaven’s sweetest song was silent, buried behind a rock. But you did not waver, O Lord. You did not waver. After three days in a dark hole, you rolled the rock and rumbled the earth and turned the darkest Friday into the brightest Sunday. Do it again, Lord. Grant us a September Easter.

We thank you, dear Father, for these hours of unity. Disaster has done what discussion could not. Doctrinal fences have fallen.Republicans are standing with Democrats. Skin colors have been covered by the ash of burning buildings. We thank you for these hours of unity. And we thank you for these hours of prayer. The Enemy sought to bring us to our knees and succeeded. He had no idea, however, that we would kneel before you. And he has no idea what you can do.

Let your mercy be upon our President, Vice President, and their families. Grant to those who lead us wisdom beyond their years and experience. Have mercy upon the souls who have departed and the wounded who remain. Give us grace that we might forgive and faith that we might believe.

And look kindly upon your church. For two thousand years you’ve used her to heal a hurting world.
Do it again, Lord. Do it again.
Through Christ,
Amen.

And Peter answered him, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” He said, “Come.” So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, “Lord, save me.”
~ Matthew 14:28-30 (ESV ~ emphasis mine)

Did you ever try to walk on water? Me neither. To be honest, I have had my fair share on being overwhelmed and I might as well have tried to walk on water. I used to get panic attacks at least once a week; mostly when I thought about the day ahead of me. All the things on my ‘to-do-list’ just seem too much to handle.

One of my favorite quotes in Max Lucado’s book “<a target=_"blank" href="http://www.maxlucado.net/_product_55050/Fearless_Hardback">Fearless” hits really close to the core…

“Feed your fears, and your faith will starve. Feed your faith, and your fears will.”

You see, if I don’t keep my eyes fixed on our Savior, I start sinking — fast like Peter. I noticed that when I get up too late for some quiet time, my day does not go well. I still have challenges during the day, however if I do spend time before my day starts, my mindset is different. Not sure how to explain it.

During my day, I usually listen to Christian music or sermons so I keep focused; I do not panic (too much) on what still needs to be done. Max Lucado is right; we need to feed our faith daily. I want to challenge you over the next 30 days: feed your faith; listen to Christian Radio, sermons on your media player, memorize Scripture passages.

How do you ‘feed’ your faith? I would love for you to share your thoughts on this topic; either in the comment section or your on own blog.

‘No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.’ ~ Romans 8:37-39 (ESV)

Thank you for stopping by today. Remember: Feed your faith, not your fears…

“He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.” ~ Colossians 1:13-14 (ESV)

Do you feel that you have disappointed God? To be honest I do some days. The way how I treat others; not always in a way He would like me to. Some days I don’t live forgiven even though I am.

Will my actions deny me entrance to heaven. No, of course not. But still…

Before I continue with this week’s look at living fearlessly, let me share a quote from ‘<a target=_"blank" href="http://www.maxlucado.com/fearless/">Fearless‘:

“‘Cash in too many mercy checks, and sooner or later one is going to bounce!’ The devil loves this line of logic. If he can convince us that God’s grace has limited funds, we’ll draw the logical conclusion. The account is empty. God has locked the door to his throne room. Pound all you want; pray all you want. No access to God.’ ~ Max Lucado (emphasis mine)

You know, I fear that when (not if) I get to heaven, that our Lord would raise an eyebrow because I didn’t follow the path He has laid out for me. I am afraid that I miss something; I miss being compassionate to someone He has put in my path…Again, what if…

In his book, Max Lucado pointed out people that have messed up ‘big-time’ (Peter, David, the Samaritan woman). Guess what? God and Jesus restore them all, forgave their sins. All three of them received grace. And you know what? So are we: forgiven and received grace.

Do I want to mess up? No, I don’t. But in my human state I do. Looking at Peter, David, and the Samaritan women, I have good company. Peter denied Christ three time (Mark 14:66-72), David took another man’s wife (<a target=_"blank" href="http://www.gnpcb.org/esv/search/?q=2+Sam+11">2 Samuel 11), the Samaritan woman had more than one husband (John 4:1-42). Where their sins greater than mine, or visa verse? This is not the point. All sins are the same in God’s eyes. I don’t have to fear to disappoint Him – He already knows that I will slip up. He has provided my way to heaven in Christ.

I think that <a target=_"blank" href="http://www.castingcrowns.com/">Casting Crowns have hit the nail right on the head when they penned the song “Who am I”. I want to close my post with the bridge of the song:

“Not because of who I am,
But because of what you’ve done.
Not because of what I’ve done,
But because of who you are.”

Thank you for stopping by today. Remember: You are forgiven, so that you can live fearlessly; you will not disappoint God.

As you remember, Karon had a wonderful guest blog on <a target=_"blank" href="http://www.eph2810.com/faith/overcoming-fear-change/">February 1st. Karon’s new book “<a target=_"blank" href="http://karongoodman.com/templates/System/details.asp?id=45123&PID=719759">Unafraid” so perfectly fits for my 2010 theme “Living Fearlessly”…

Some of the questions Karon posted at the end of her blog:

What change are you facing now? What has your response been – to fear or to build?

How have you overcome a fear of change in the past, or what have you learned from your fear in the past that helps you now when change happens?

Why do you think we fear change so, and how do you think God wants us to respond to it in our lives?

I haven’t handled some of my life chances well; honestly I down right struggled. My dad’s death, my move the US, my son moving out just to name a few. Today, I do not want to share anything from my past, but would like to respond to Karon’s first question. I want to encourage you with my words…

Girls, I am turning 50 this year!?! Standing before a fork in the road I am wondering what I would like to do with the rest of my life…

Several weeks ago I open my Bible to the epistle of James. The following verses the Lord impress upon my heart:

“Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit”— yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes. Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.”” ~ James 4:13-15 (ESV ~ emphasis mine)

James is telling us not to look too far ahead. Hm, interesting…Don’t get me wrong; I still make plans and have dreams for the future…but I am looking now first to get His approval to move ahead. I am not waiting to see a direct sign from heaven, however I know that He has my blue-print of life in His beautiful hands. He will open or close doors.

I am excited to step out in faith, knowing that He will be there all the way. I know that I will still encounter valleys but that does not strike me with fear. He has a pretty good ‘track-record’ in my life. He is always ready to send someone special into my day to encourage me.

Sweet one, I know that this life is not easy. God placed some special women in your life as well. They are more than willing to share your fears, dreams and hopes by praying over you. Don’t be afraid to ask your girl friends to stand by you. I am blessed and thankful that I have these special women in my life…they help me to live life with less fear.

Thank you for stopping by today. Remember: Live life for the here and now…giving your hopes and dreams to Him; He has your blue-print in His hands.

My series based on Max Lucado’s book “<a target=_"blank" href="http://www.maxlucado.com/fearless/">Fearless” will continue on March 8th. I hope you will join me than again for “Living Fearlessly in 2010″…

And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. But even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not, therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows.” ~ Matthew 10:29-31 (ESV ~ emphasis mine)

“I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well.” ~ Psalm 139:14 (ESV)

Did you ever wanted to be famous? I did. When I was a teenager I wanted to be a backup singer for T.Rex; I even learned all the lyrics to all their hit songs… Me, a backup singer to tour with a famous 70′s British band? Thinking back makes me giggle, because I was only 13 years old at their height of fame.

Max Lucado writes in his book “Fearless“:

“Ah, There it is. There is the question. The Amazon River out of which a thousand fears flow: do we matter? We fear we don’t. We fear nothingness, insignificance. We fear evaporation. We fear that in the last tabulation we make no contribution to the final sum. We fear coming and going and non one knowing” and “Connect to someone special and become someone special, right?”

Yes, there it is “connect to someone special…” and maybe, just maybe I can catch a little ray of their lime-light that I too would matter…

That was me when I started blogging some 5 years ago. If you look way back into my archives, I tried so hard to matter. I connected to famous woman so I too would matter in bloggy-ville. I wanted to change the world just like they did. I wanted to be heard – loud and clear. How can I archive that? Link up, hook up…

Well, God had a lesson for me on that…I truly believe that we have to be humbled before He can truly use our gifts. The word “discouragement” was often on my mind; as much so that I wanted to just quit blogging all together — “I didn’t matter”…

But God kept after me; to stay with it. I mattered to Him and His message. He reminded me that we all have different gifts. Not all can be a Beth Moore, Lysa TerKeurst, or Lisa McKay. He gives even ‘small’ people like me a voice – to share about His incredible love, devotion and grace with others.

Sweet one, you too matter to Him. Would’ve sent His only Son into a cruel world to die our death? Would Jesus go all the way up Calvary to be nailed to the cross if we would not matter? I don’t think so!

Today I link up/hook up because men and women are an inspiration to me. I no longer need their lime-light to matter – I matter to Him, and that is enough for me.

Where there times when you linked up so you could catch a lime-light ray? Please do share – it does not have to be connected with blogging; maybe in your immediate surroundings? Did you ever wish you could be like ________?

Over the next week I would like you to ponder the Cross. What does the Cross say about how much you matter to God? Come back here to share either in the comment section or write about it on your blog.

Also, if you have not read Karon’s guest blog last Monday, I would like to encourage you to read it. Karon has a marvelous message about “Fear of Change“. I will be sharing my own thoughts on change next Monday.

Thank you for stopping by today. Remember: not matter how small you think you are, you matter to Him who wonderfully created you.

“I give thanks to you, O Lord my God,
with my whole heart,
and I will glorify your name forever.”
~ Psalm 86:12 (ESV – emphasis mine)

This month we are meeting over at my friend Lynn’s place <a target=_'blank' href="http://unequalmarriage.typepad.com/my_weblog/2010/01/i-am-thankful-for-the-unexpected-thankful-thursday.html">“Spiritually Unequal Marriage”; in the month of February we are meeting a my place “Grace Alone…”.

I know I should have written out my thankful post last week, but it has been incredible tough to find time in the evenings. By the time I finally settle down my brain is complete mush; when I am tired I notice twice that English is my second language . Tonight I still have a little brain-waves left (and hopefully my English will hold up too)…

This week I want to write about the upcoming opportunities. I really need to figure out how to turn my photography into a business. I don’t know how much longer I can deal with accounting (30 years is really enough )…

Well, the first step came via an invitation by Kristen Schiffman from <a target=_'blank' href="http://exemplifyonline.com/">Exemplify. Although this is not a paying job, I thank God for the opportunity to share my photography with a bigger audience than my blogging friends. Kristen asked me to supply some of my photos for the online magazine on a regular basis – Yeah God!!!

Tomorrow (Thursday) I will meet up with a couple of friends from my former employer. I am very excited to donate my talents to <a target=_'blank' href="http://www.glstempe.com/">Gethsemane Lutheran School (go Gators!!!!) for their annual school fundraiser. I always loved supporting this private Christian school and I pray that my donation will get a little money for their operation . I am most excited though to have lunch with some sweet ladies I can call friends. It will be fun chatting up a storm with Ann and Betty (love you ladies)…

I am so thankful that God has given me these two opportunities. I will not know where they will lead, but I trust Him, because He already knows.

I read a great quote this evening by Max Lucado (one day I will share why I like this author so much):

Hallowed be your name. We enter the chapel and beseech, “Be hallowed, Lord.” Do whatever it takes to be holy in my life. Take your rightful place on the throne. Exalt yourself. Magnify yourself. Glorify yourself. You be Lord, and I’ll be quiet. (taken from “<a target=_'blank' href="http://www.maxlucado.net/_product_30305/The_Great_House_of_God">The Great House of God” – emphasis mine)

What are you thankful for this week? Head on over to <a target=_'blank' href="http://unequalmarriage.typepad.com/my_weblog/2010/01/i-am-thankful-for-the-unexpected-thankful-thursday.html">Lynn’s blog to share with others.

Thank you for stopping by tonight/today. Remember: you never know when God opens a door for you – take heart, step through it and trust Him for the outcome.

“And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.” ~ Romans 8:28 (ESV)

How can you tell a father who is facing lay-offs; a wife who’s husband left her for another woman; parents facing the death of a child, families loosing their home, chemotherapy …that everything is working out for the good? I often have a hard time comprehending what is happening. Do I question God because not everything is working out the way I think things should work out?

We all have our fears. I my personal opinion, fear in itself is not a sin, but how we handle it can send us in the wrong direction. Fear can consume us to the point that we are afraid of stepping out into life; or even worse…gambling, lying, stealing…But we don’t have to have fear consume us.

I think that we sometimes loose focus because of fear. We only see our current circumstance and don’t look at the bigger picture — the eternal picture. Take my past as an example. I feared coming to the US, leaving family and friends behind with an uncertain future (would I find work? what support would I have). Looking back though — leaving Germany was the best that could have happened to me. Removed from family and friends, God had my attention. He was waiting for me with arms wide open to put my trust in Him, not myself.

Over the next week, I would like you to look back at your past. What was the biggest step you have taken? What was your greatest fear about taken this particular step? Failure, insecurity, rejection? I would love to hear about your past fear(s) and how you have overcome it. What brought you through?

If you have a blog, please share your past with us (link below). If you don’t blog — journal and share part of your thoughts in the comment section. You can journal/blog at your own leisure; there is no deadline to answer the above questions.

Today I leave you with a quote by Max Lucado you may want to ponder:

“When fear shapes our live, safety becomes our god. When safety becomes our god, we worship the risk-free life. Can the safety-lover do anything great?…For God? For others?” ~ Source: Fearless

Living fearlessly — trusting Him with my future…

I will strengthen you, I will help you,
I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
~ Isaiah 41:10 (ESV)

2009 marked a year of reflection for me personally. It was a little quiet around this blog. I felt like that I didn’t belong in any of the ‘groups’ that formed around the Christian blogging community. What did I have to add? Who would read what I had to say? Yes, a lot of fear sat in; fear that my thoughts did not matter…

Oh, but there is so much to share. Yes, I am much older than most of the bloggers out there, but I can attest to His faithfulness. I can encourage lonely hearts, overwhelmed moms, discouraged married women. God has giving me a new purpose — living fearlessly!!!!

“Fear creates a form of spiritual amnesia. It dulls our miracle memory. It makes us forget what Jesus has done and how good God is” ~ Max Lucado (Fearless)

On January 11th I would like you to join me on a journey of fearless living. How will it work? I will post a couple of Scripture passages and a question or two. You can join in on this bi-weekly series by writing your thoughts on the question(s) on your personal blog and then link up here on Grace Alone. If you don’t blog, but would like to participate in the journey, journal your thoughts. This series is here to encourage you; to step out in faith without fear.

Since this new blogging series was inspired by Max Lucado’s book “Fearless“, I would like to give away a copy of the book along with a copy of the “Promise Book” (which is packed full of encouraging Scripture passages — thank you Lori for the gift). How can you win the books? Share with your friends about the fearless journey. Blog (you can pick up a button in my sidebar), twitter, or Facebook about this series. Each mentioning of this series will enter your name in the drawing (please leave separate comments)…

I am looking forward you joining me in this journey of fearless living…

I got a little creative — again. Last night I was working on some bookmarks. These bookmarks are a little larger than the ones you can usually buy in bookstores. I have used my photography and added Scriptures passages from the ESV Bible.

The first one is my personal favorite bookmark. The Scripture passage is Isaiah 41:10 – ‘my’ passage for 2010 (the passage also adorns my desktop at the moment). The photo is a shot of the Superstition Mountains (our ‘backyard’ mountain)…

The second bookmark I am sharing with you has 2 Corinthians 4:7. The pots I photographed at a local gift shop. I think the Scripture passage works very well with the clay-pots…

Tomorrow I will share the last two I made for this set of 4. I am wondering if someone would buy these bookmarks. What do you think?

At any rate, tomorrow I will giveaway 2 sets of 4. So stop by to sign up for the giveaway.

Also, I am working on a new series that will start January 11th. I will post every other Monday and I pray that you will join in. The topic? Living fearlessly in 2010! Yes, this topic is based on Max Lucado’s book “Fearless“, and I will giveaway a copy of the book in the first week of January.
